Guidance for Jesus-First Families

Cultivating Intentional Rhythms

Here is a hard truth: parents teach their children everyday what it looks like to live life with God. John Mark Comer, Pastor and Author of "Practicing the Way of Jesus" said "Spiritual formation is not a Christian thing, it's a human thing." If you are like I was as a young Christian father, you probably could not make a list of 3 things to build spiritual character aside from, go to church on Sunday and pray over your meals. Our approach to making disciples at home starts with helping parents to see their God-given purpose in raising children to love Him and to love others. Family Coaches can come from couples in your home church who have been equipped to lovingly help you lead your family in the ways of Jesus. This is a highly relational approach that is not legalistic in any way.

Jesus-First Family Coaches

Every family has it's own unique rhythm. Beyond the 9-to-5 work schedules, there are the soccer, baseball, football, cheerleading, band marching, etc. opportunities during the week to keep life hectic. Life was similarly "busy" during Jesus' time. Humans have a tendency to make more things to do than we have time to do them. The challenge for Christians today is as it was in Jesus' time: Replace the chaos with calm, sustainable habits that draw us near God. We know change from the American lifestyle will be a challenge but the rewards far outweigh the obstacles. In Titus 1:5, Paul told Titus to "appoint elders in every town" because what was happening in the town where Titus lived was getting too big for him to manage. Our approach is to train people from your church to become "elders" over a few families. We call these couples, Family Coaches. Their role is to come along side of parents to pray with them and to gently coach them to lead their families in the ways of Jesus. Coaching sessions happen on a monthly basis.

We equip your senior Christians to empower parents as primary spiritual mentors, Family Coaches. For many years, Christian churches have lacked a "playbook" for making disciples. John Mark Comer, Pastor and Author of "Practicing the Way - Be with Jesus, Become like Him, Do as He did." Pastor Comer identified nine spiritual practices that Jesus regularly did, wrote this book, and created a video library of courses and resources for churches to equip their people with the ways of Jesus. We believe these provide a primary foundation for making disciples who spend time with Jesus through the practices and become like Him. Our approach is rooted in these nine practices plus one additional practice. This is what we teach Coaches.
